DES MOINES – To celebrate Flag Day, State Treasurer Roby Smith is showcasing safe deposit box items held in the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt. “The American flag is the most-defining symbol of the United States,” said Smith. “Its powerful representation of pride, freedom, courage, justice and sacrifice are what bring people to own various items encompassing the flag. Take a look at some flag and America-related pieces sent to my office from abandoned safe deposit boxes.”
- Shawn Jones of Cedar Rapids – 2001 American heroes silver dollar, American flag pin
- Lorene Quick of Ankeny – American flag coin
- James Walton of Council Bluffs – American flag pin
- Teresina Bartolomei of Des Moines – Statue of Liberty coin
- Terri Howlett of Clear Lake – American flag money clip

- Piper Consulting Group LLC of Des Moines – American flag
- Amanda Golderman of Davenport – American eagle silver dollar

“Just as the American Flag has a story to tell, these items have a story and a reason as to why they were kept,” Smith said. “Help me uncover the history and reunite these ‘old glory’ items with their rightful owner by telling those you know to search GreatIowaTreasureHunt.gov.”
Each year, financial institutions send the contents of safe deposit boxes to the State Treasurer’s Office as unclaimed property after going a specific period of time with no activity. Treasurer Smith then works to reunite the contents with the rightful owner through the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt. Additional forms of unclaimed property include forgotten checking and savings accounts, uncashed checks, stocks, life insurance payouts and utility refunds.
