State Treasurer Roby Smith Launches Money Match Initiative to Return Unclaimed Property Faster

State Treasurer Roby Smith kicked off day two of the Iowa State Fair in the Varied Industries Building by announcing Money Match, a new initiative from Great Iowa Treasure Hunt designed to make it easier for Iowans to get unclaimed funds back in their pockets.

“Since taking office, I’ve worked hard to modernize the way Great Iowa Treasure Hunt returns lost money back to owners and heirs,” said State Treasurer Smith. “Money Match is that next step. With this new initiative, we are streamlining the process to return funds for many Iowans.”

Using secure data provided by the Department of Revenue, the Treasurer’s Office is able to verify ownership and automatically send a check to the rightful owners through the new initiative. While Money Match will simplify the process for many Iowans, not every property will qualify for an automatic payment. More complex claims, like estates, businesses, trusts, securities and certain owner claims, will continue to follow the traditional claims process.

“Keep an eye out to see if you’ll be one of the first recipients of a check for Money Match,” said Treasurer Smith. “We will start off by sending a letter, notifying you that you’ll be receiving funds. A few weeks later, the funds should arrive in your mailbox in the form of a warrant, which is like a check, from the State of Iowa.”

Even with the new initiative, Treasurer Smith still encourages Iowans to visit GreatIowaTreasureHunt.gov and search their name.

“Money Match is going to be a great addition to the way my office works to reunite properties, but not all properties will qualify,” said Treasurer Smith. “That’s why I’m telling everyone watching, listening or reading this right now to take a couple of minutes to search GreatIowaTreasureHunt.gov and see if they have property available to claim.”
