Unclaimed Property
One in Seven Iowans Has Unclaimed Property
Each year, millions of dollars in money and other assets, collectively called unclaimed property, are turned over to the State Treasurer’s Office for safekeeping. These assets become unclaimed when a financial institution or business loses contact with the owner, whether due to a name change, change of address, death or other reasons. Assets can include:
- funds from inactive checking or savings accounts
- uncashed checks
- funds left in Venmo and other digital payment services
- valuables from abandoned safe deposit boxes
- lost stocks and bonds

Beyond protecting Iowans’ unclaimed money, returning the money to rightful owners is also a crucial part of the State Treasurer's role. Great Iowa Treasure Hunt, administered by the State Treasurer’s Office, is Iowa’s only legitimate program for returning unclaimed property to past and present Iowans. Search your name, the names of family and friends, and the names of favorite businesses.
