Treasurer Smith Awards $5,290 ISave 529 Contribution to Van Zee Family of Colfax

October 9, 2024

DES MOINES – State Treasurer Roby Smith recently awarded a $5,290 ISave 529 account contribution to the Van Zee family of Colfax. Eric Van Zee’s entry for his 13-year-old son, Landon, was randomly drawn as the winner of ISave 529’s 2024 College Savings Month Giveaway. “Contributing to Landon’s ISave 529 account means more money to potentially grow in his account until he is ready to use it,” said Smith. “The contribution will help Landon go from here to anywhere his educational journey leads!”

"We have always wanted our kids to have the opportunity to go to college,” Van Zee said. “Winning this giveaway is a great jump start towards college for Landon, and it also encourages us to start a 529 account for our other kids."

Money invested in ISave 529 can be used to pay for tuition, room and board, computers, textbooks and more at any eligible higher-education institution in the U.S. or abroad, including apprenticeship programs and trade schools. In addition to higher-education expenses, funds can also be used for K-12 tuition and repayment of qualified education loans. Account Owners who are Iowa taxpayers can deduct up to $5,500 of their contributions per Beneficiary account from their state income taxes in 2024.

“The goal of this giveaway was to raise awareness of ISave 529 and saving for future education costs,” continued Smith. “Saving for a child’s education is more than just reducing debt; it’s telling them you believe in their dreams.”
