Start Contributing to an IAble Account with as Little as $1

May 19, 2025

A coin is being placed into a pink piggy bank.

State Treasurer Roby Smith announced a reduction of the minimum contribution limit to an IAble (Iowa’s Achieving a Better Life Experience) account to $1, effective immediately. This change gives eligible individuals with a disability easier access to contribute to an account and begin saving money while protecting means-tested benefits.

“Investing looks different for everyone, and lowering the minimum amount to $1 makes sense so we can get individuals saving for their future needs right away,” said Treasurer Smith. “Regardless of income level, I believe everyone should have access to a savings account, and IAble accounts give those with a disability the opportunity and flexibility to save – all while protecting their means-tested benefits like SSI and Medicaid. If you or a loved one has a disability, I encourage you to visit IAble.gov and learn more about this important program.”

Previously, the minimum threshold to contribute to an account was $25. The recent reduction of the minimum contribution reduces barriers for an eligible individual on their savings journey. Funds from IAble accounts can be spent on qualifying disability expenses like housing, basic living expenses, employment training and so much more.

IAble has helped more than 3,000 individuals with disabilities save money while maintaining their eligibility for federal assistance programs. To learn more about opening an IAble account, visit IAble.gov. For additional details regarding IAble, read the Plan Disclosure Booklet.
