Iowa's Economic Outlook

For the past five years, Iowa’s economy has continued to experience improvements. In August, the state’s unemployment rate remained low at 3.7% (compared to the national rate of 5.1%), ranking Iowa as the sixth lowest in the nation. Though current prices for certain agricultural commodities are lower than normal, the state’s employment level has been boosted by increased hiring in the financial, professional, business and construction sectors. The resurgence of the housing market in Iowa has prompted the growth in the construction industry, as well as strong increases in home prices and home sales. Overall, if the economy for the first half of 2015 is an indicator, Iowans should be looking forward to 2016.
