State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald met with the Boone Rotary Club on February 21, where he provided information about the programs in his office. Dr. Jeff Anderson extended the invitation to the treasurer to join the group for lunch.
Fitzgerald discussed the benefits of the College Savings Iowa 529 Plan and how they could work together to get more families in Boone County saving for college. Currently, there are nearly 1,100 College Savings Iowa accounts open in Boone County, representing $12 million invested for higher education. “We discussed how important planning is for young people and their families. Statistics show that a child is six times more likely to continue his/her education with a dedicated college savings account,” Fitzgerald stated. “Members of the Boone Rotary Club showed a desire to help get more families in Boone County prepared for their future. I am impressed with their dedication to the community.”
Fitzgerald also shared a list of Boone County residents that have unclaimed property waiting for them to be claimed in the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt, Iowa’s unclaimed property program. “We are holding money for the Boone Community Theater and one Rotary member pledged to help to get that money back to the theater,” Fitzgerald stated. “There are millions more in Boone County and through organizations like the rotary, we can work together to get the money back in the rightful owners hands.” The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt has returned over $240 million in unclaimed property to more than 574,000 individuals since Fitzgerald started the program in 1983. Common forms of unclaimed property include savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, life insurance policies, utility security deposits and safe deposit box contents. “The rotary organization is vital to communities such as Boone,” Fitzgerald expressed. “I always enjoy updating them on what is going on in my office and in state government.”
